Overview Demo
At the core of the Diligent’s ProtecTIER platform is our revolutionary technology, HyperFactor – which effectively changes the economics and usage profile of disk-based data protection.
Protect More while Storing Less. HyperFactor is based on a series of algorithms that identify and filter out elements of data that have been previously stored by ProtecTIER. The effect is that only new data elements are stored on disk. Over time, the impact is a 25X or more capacity increase of the physical storage capacity.

Industry’s Fastest De-Duplication. ProtecTIER is reaching speeds of 400-450MBPS in real customer production environments, while performing de-duplication in real-time. HyperFactor performs inline data de-duplication, which means that the de-duplication process occurs in real-time as the back data stream is ingested by ProtecTIER. When the backup job completes, so too does the de-duplication process. HyperFactor’s efficiency in finding and eliminating redundant data enables the speed of the overall platform. To perform the de-dupe process, HyperFactor utilizes a very efficient RAM-based index that maps the entire contents and location of the disk target at a very granular level. The index allows HyperFactor to rapidly identify data matches, enabling a very high throughput rate. The index can map up to 1 Petabyte (PB) of physical storage utilizing just 4GB of RAM on the ProtecTIER server, a 250,000:1 ratio of disk storage to index memory. Hash based approaches are approximately 500X less efficient in their use of an index, meaning that to address 1PB of storage would require a 2TB index. This fundamentally limits hash based systems in both scalability and throughput.
| HyperFactor Differentiators: | ||
| Inline De-Duplication | • | Inline de-duplication ensures that there will be no disruption to production activities. This is in contrast to post-process de-duplication approaches that require long “secondary windows” during which the de-dupe process runs |
| Performance | • | ProtecTIER is achieving 400-450MBPS throughput per node in live customer environments — 8-10X faster than any other vendor delivering inline de-duplication |
| 25X Capacity Increase | • | HyperFactor enables 25X increase in usable capacity |
| 100% Data Integrity | • | The unique process of HyperFactor ensures 100% data integrity and avoids any risk of “hash collisions” or “false positive” data matches associated with hash-based de-dupe |
| Enterprise Proven | • | HyperFactor has been in production in Fortune 500 data centers since mid-year 2005 |
| Data Agnostic | • | Unlike “content-aware” approaches, HyperFactor is not sensitive to the type of data that is received by ProtecTIER, the names of files, or data structure of the specific backup application |
