New research from Diligent Institute brings those pressures into focus. Drawing on a survey of 230 leaders, the Governance outlook 2027 for mission-driven organizations explores the risks, priorities and governance trends shaping the future of public board oversight.

One finding stands out: Boards are looking for ways to spend less time looking backward and more time looking ahead. Nearly half of respondents said they want more time for strategic planning, while many also called for more structured and proactive risk oversight.
For public facing boards, that is not just a meeting-efficiency issue. It is about creating enough space to question assumptions, connect risk to strategy and make decisions that serve the community over the long term.
