Trust is built in the everyday moments when community members try to understand how decisions are made. When agendas, minutes and board materials are easy to find, it becomes easier for communities to follow decisions, stay informed and engage with confidence. That's why public access is more than an administrative task. It's a core part of good governance, and this month we're looking at practical ways boards can make transparency easier to deliver and easier for communities to follow.
If your board is looking for practical ways to improve access, start with two useful resources: Access and equity in public education: A checklist for school boards and district leaders and Access and inclusion in local government: A checklist for leaders.
Together, these guides offer practical ways to review policies, identify gaps, support community engagement and make access and inclusion easier to build into your day-to-day governance work.
In Good governance requires good tools: Why school boards need better superintendent accountability, Dr. Audrey Young, member of the Texas State Board of Education and the Chair of the Committee on Instruction for TSBE, explores why superintendent evaluation should be one of the board’s most important governance responsibilities. The article examines how boards can connect evaluation more closely to district goals, performance and accountability, while using the right governance tools to keep oversight structured, transparent and focused on outcomes.
When residents have to search across multiple pages or request documents manually, even basic transparency can feel harder than it should. Diligent Community’s public transparency site gives boards one ADA-compliant public-facing hub for agendas, minutes, policies and supporting documents, helping staff publish information more consistently and making it easier for residents to find what they need.
That means less confusion, less time spent answering routine access questions and a clearer path to community engagement from the start.
After migrating from BoardDocs to Diligent Community, Southwestern College streamlined agenda packet prep, improved mobile access and made communication easier with better search, filtering and notifications.
The move helped simplify day-to-day board administration while making it easier for stakeholders to access the information they need. As Myra Lomahan, Executive Assistant to the Superintendent/President & Governing Board, put it:
“Change can be challenging, but the move to Diligent Community has been incredibly rewarding. It has simplified our processes and made our lives much easier.”

We’re thrilled to spotlight Tricia Winters as our Diligent Community Champion for the month of August.
A lifelong member of Arizona’s Verde Valley community and a graduate of the Cottonwood-Oak Creek School District, Tricia has spent more than 20 years building strong connections between schools, families and the community she calls home.
Her dedication has earned her recognition as the 2023 Sisterhood Connection Woman of the Year and the Doralee "Terri" Wentsch Lifelong Educator & Community Member Award. When asked what good governance means to her, Tricia shared that it means leading with trust, transparency and strong ethics while always keeping the best interests of students, staff and the community at the center of every decision.

This month, we’re also celebrating Barry Byrne, our Person of Purpose for August.
Barry is a Senior Client Operations Specialist at Diligent, working in a role that blends support, customer success and development. His work ranges from testing new releases and investigating client requests to stylizing sites and developing Community templates, all with a focus on making the experience better for customers.
One of Barry’s favorite things about Diligent Community is the team’s ability to take client feedback to heart and act on it. Earlier this year, he helped adjust the agendas and minutes templates to be more space-efficient, a change driven directly by client input.
We’re excited to spotlight Barry this month and grateful for the creativity he brings to the Diligent Community team.
